If you've been injured and believe you have a bone fracture, visiting Maryland Orthopedic Institute is the first step to finding out exactly what has happened and how you can fix it. Dr. Farrell is an expert in treating different types of factures—from sports-related stress fractures to compound fractures caused by a fall or accident.

When you have a fracture, you are suffering from a broken bone. A fracture can occur when there is a physical force exerted on the bone. Not only are broken bones are common during childhood; but also common as you get older, as bones become more stiff and delicate. There are various types of fractures.

The four main categories of fractures include:

  • Displaced
  • Non-Displaced
  • Open
  • Closed

A displaced fracture is when the bone cracks into two or more portions and moves so the bone ends do not line up correctly. When a non-displaced fracture occurs, the bone breaks either part or all of the way through but does not move out of its proper position. An open fracture is when the bone breaks through the skin and a closed fracture is when the bone breaks, but does not puncture the skin.

Types of Fractures

The severity of a fracture depends on the force that caused the injury. If the bone's breaking point is only slightly exceeded, the bone may crack instead of completely breaking. If the force is severe, the bone can shatter. A greenstick fracture is a type of fracture in children that results in an incomplete break where the bone is bent. A transverse fracture is when a break is at a right angle to the bone's axis. Contact us today at Maryland Orthopedic Institute by calling 240-449-8262 to schedule an appointment!
